Description
Finpecia 1mg (Finasteride)
This listing is for Finpecia 1mg (Finasteride) (1mg). Form: oral tablet/capsule unless otherwise stated on the pack.
Educational information based on trusted clinical references (including MedlinePlus, Mayo Clinic, NHS, and NICE/EMA sources where applicable). Not a substitute for medical advice.
What it is
A 5-alpha reductase inhibitor prescribed for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and the physical symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men.
How it works
It blocks the action of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, which stops the body's conversion of testosterone to DHT—the hormone that causes prostate growth and halts scalp hair growth.
Typical use
Administered as a daily oral tablet with or without food, taken at around the same time each day. Effects only persist for as long as you take the medication.
Onset & duration
Requires consistent daily use. Hair loss improvements can take 3 months or more to develop, and prostate size reduction or BPH relief can take up to 6 months. Once stopped, any hair gained is likely lost within 1 year.
Common side effects
Decreased libido, inability to get or maintain an erection, ejaculation problems (such as decreased volume of ejaculate), and testicular pain. These can persist after stopping treatment.
Serious warnings
May increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer and male breast cancer. Promptly report any breast changes, lumps, persistent depression, or suicidal ideation to a doctor. Can also decrease male fertility.
Who should avoid
Strictly contraindicated in women and children. Pregnant women, or those who may become pregnant, must never handle crushed or broken tablets, as the active drug can be absorbed through the skin and cause birth defects in male babies. Use with caution in those with liver disease.
Interactions
May interact with St. John's Wort and other systemic substances; verify your full medication list with your clinician.
