Dapoxetine is a short-acting selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and the first pharmacological treatment for premature ejaculation (PE) licensed in the UK.
Efficacy
A pooled analysis of randomized controlled trials indicated a statistically significant increase in intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT). For instance, the IELT increased from 0.9 minutes with placebo to 3.1 and 3.6 minutes with dapoxetine 30 mg and 60 mg, respectively.
Safety
Common adverse reactions include dizziness, headache, and nausea. Caution is advised for men with a history of orthostatic hypotension or severe depression.
Usage Guidelines
Dapoxetine should be taken on demand, approximately 1 to 3 hours before sexual activity. It is not FDA-approved for PE in the US.
